10 Animals That Went Extinct in the Last Century

Certain animal species are often in the news these days and the news is not comforting. The last century has seen the heartbreaking extinction of several incredible species — many of them wiped out due to human actions. Here are ten animals that disappeared from our world forever, reminding us of the urgent need to protect what remains so ecological balance is maintained.

These animals roamed the earth long before humans even evolved. Yet, when humans took over the reigns and dominated the world like no other animal before, these animals vanished forever. The causes were not natural but were the outcome of human actions and the saddest part is that this is ongoing. Their extinction cannot be written off as just a loss of some species, but it is a loss of ancient life that the earth nurtured for millions of years.

1. Baiji Dolphin

Famously called the "Goddess of the Yangtze," this freshwater dolphin from China became extinct due to building of dams, pollution and boat traffic.

2. Western Black Rhinoceros

Rampant poaching for its horn caused extinction of Western black rhinoceros, which is a subspecies of the black rhinoceros. This majestic animal was declared extinct in 2011.

3. Pinta Island Tortoise

On the northernmost part of Galapagos islands lies Pinta Island where the great tortoise once lived, roamed around, reproduced and passed over the region for its future generations. Not anymore as Pinta Island Tortoise's extinction was caused by hunting for food. Adding to this was scarcity of food caused due to import of goats, which grazed the grasslands. The last known member was named Lonesome George and protected in captivity. Following his death in 2012, this species became history.

4. Thylacine

Called as 'Tasmanian Tiger' and 'Tasmanian Wolf, Thylacine was hunted to extinction. The sole survivor died in captivity in the year 1936.

5. Golden Toad

Native to Costa Rica’s cloud forests, this vividly colored toad was pushed to extinction due to clhange in climatic conditions, habitat loss and disease. Since it was not spotted after 1989, the species was declared extinct by IUCN.

6. Caribbean Monk Seal

Extensive exploration for oil in sea and overfishing caused extinction of Caribbean Monk Seal. The species was declared extinct in 2008.

7. Pyrenean Ibex

A type of mountain goat, the Pyrenean Ibex lived in the Pyrenees Mountains, which lies on the borders of France and Spain. Hunting and habitat loss caused extinction of this species. A cloned individual was born in 2003 but died shortly after birth. It became the first species to go extinct twice.

8. Spix's Macaw

Spix’s Macaw, also called the Little Blue Macaw, is a striking blue parrot once found in Brazil. Illegal pet trade and deforestation caused the end of these beautiful birds. Though a few survive in captivity, it’s considered extinct in the wild. The hopeful news is that conservationists are working to reintroduce it to its natural habitat.

9. Javan Tiger

The Javan Tiger once roamed the dense forests of Java, Indonesia. Destruction of forests and extensive hunting led to its disappearance by the 1980s.

10. Tecopa Pupfish

Native to hot springs in California's Mojave Desert, Tecopa pupfish is now lost to the world forever. Changes in water temperature and growing numbers of resorts in the region caused extinction of this species. Tecopa pupfish was declared extinct in the year 1981.

Extinction of animals due to human activities has to be addressed with utmost urgency. We all have a role to play in protecting wildlife and making informed decisions in every step of our life so we do not contribute to reducing the number of species in the world. Our positive efforts will go a long way in protecting wildlife and the world.

We can commence our efforts by making the right choice of products we use everyday:

Using biodegradable garbage covers:This ensures prevention of plastic waste that pollute natural habitat of animals.

  • Similar to Keezhadi excavations which bring to light the rich past of the Thamizh civilization, Thirumoolar's Thirumanthiram draws our attention to the unbelievably rich knowledge possessed by ancient Thamizh civilization in the field of medicine. It will be only right to say that Thirumoolar would have been the world's first anatomical scientist.
