Mudras for Cold and Cough Relief

Even about 18 months back, there was not a lot of fuss about one catching cold. For ages, home remedies were always the go-to solution when one was down with cold and cough. People were comfortable saying, "Cold has to run its course". Yes, that was about one and half years back. Not now, with corona catching so fast people are no more comfortable even if one in their neighborhood shows slightest symptoms of catching cold.

Considering the current scenario, it is going to be mudras for cold and cough.

1) Suriya Mudra

One of the powerful mudras among five element mudras, Suriya Mudra helps to regulate body temperature.

Excessive heat in the body, that is, when the fire element is in excess in the body, it can lead to fever, high blood pressure and heart conditions. When the fire element is low in the body, it can lead to cold, respiratory conditions, thyroid issues, indigestion and heart conditions. Suriya Mudra regulates body temperature and helps to maintain optimal health.

How to Perform Suriya Mudra?

Perform suriya mudra for 30 minutes a day. You can practice for 15 minutes, twice a day. You can perform the mudra while walking. The mudra should be practiced with both hands simultaneously.

  • Stretch your fingers.
  • Bend your ring finger and place the tip of the ring finger under your thumb.
  • Bend your thumb and place it on the folded ring finger applying very light pressure.
  • Keep the remaining fingers stretched.
  • Focus on your mudra. Maintain normal breathing.

Note: Those with fever and experiencing excessive tiredness should refrain from practicing suriya mudra. It is also not recommended to practice suriya mudra during peak summer.

How to Perform Agaya Mudra?

Agaya mudra can be performed for about 30 to 45 minutes a day. You can perform it thrice a day with 15 minutes practice during each session.

  • Assume Lotus Pose / Thunderbolt Pose / Easy Pose.
  • Bring the tip of your thumb and middle finger without applying pressure.
  • Keep your fingers stretched.
  • Close your eyes and focus on the mudra.
  • Maintain normal breathing.

How to Perform Linga Mudra?

 

It is recommended to practice Linga mudra for 15 minutes a day initially. With regular practice the duration can be increased to 45 minutes with 15 minutes practice a session for three sessions.

  • Bring your palms together. With the left hand thumb above the other fingers, keep the remaining fingers interlocked.
  • Keep your left hand thumb straight.
  • Bring the tips of right hand thumb and index finger together around the left hand thumb.
  • Close your eyes and focus on the Mudra.
  • Maintain normal breathing.

Note

Since linga mudra increases heat in the body, you need to increase intake of fluids on days you practice the mudra.

Avoid practicing the mudra during hot summer times.

Refrain from practicing the mudra during fever.
